Luke 12:22-23

Luke 12:22-23 (NASB)
"Then Jesus said to his disciples: 'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.' "

So, how does the fact that "Life is more than food" and "the body more than clothes" help emphasize that we shouldn't worry about either of them? If I say the following:

1. Don't worry about A and B
2. Don't worry about C and D
3. A is more important than B
4. C is more important than D

How does point 3 help point 1, and point 4 help point 2? Points 3 and 4 are pretty much moot to the whole argument. Jesus does wrap up the argument nicely in the following verses. But the last sentence (points 3 and 4) in verse 23 there is irrelevant. Why would he put it in there?

I think its not saying do not worry about life or food, but rather don't worry about life i.e. food. The reference to food is a qualification and explanation of what he is getting at.

The primary worries under consideration are food and clothes. However, there is more to life then trying to find enough food to eat.

Hrm that makes sense. I've always interpreted the commas to be "or"s. They should use colons there. Too bad Jesus didn't speak Latin. An "id est" would have been helpful in between instead of nothing. Assuming that's what he meant of course...

The ESV says: "22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing."
This seems a bit clearer. I agree with Winston, that he's saying that food and clothing, while useful and necessary, shouldn't become a distraction from the whole point of life, which, I believe, is the life after this.
